Fly Indonesian Airlines

There are quite a few major Indonesian airlines that fly domestically, and for some, internationally. But are they safe? Comfortable? On time? Let's take a look at these major Indonesian airlines..

1. Garuda Indonesia

Most of you know this one as this is the national airline of Indonesia and now one of the world's leading airline. This airline is also the only one that is an alliance with Skyteam. The airline is rated as a 5-star airline by the international airline review firm Skytrax.

This is the best option for you who wants reliability, consistency and relaxation on board. They fly domestically and internationally. While I had delays as well on this airline, however they are much more professional regarding the delays than the other airlines that I'm about to share. Food are usually given in a snack box for shorter flights, like breads or cookies and water.

Price wise, well, this airline is the most costly out of all the airlines here in Indonesia. Sometimes, they are even more expensive than their counterparts (international flights). Definitely not for anyone who is on a budget. Even their domestic flights are always the most expensive in Indonesia. I guess you get what you paid for, but if you are just flying domesticaly or just short flights to Singapore, I don't think it's worth it to fly with this one. Anyway, that's just my opinion. I'm those people who would rather spend my money on food and seeing cultural sites, enjoying my holiday rather than spending it on flights.

Citilink is a subsidiary of Garuda Indonesia and they mainly fly domestically only. If you ar flying to Jakarta, please note that some Citilink flights land on Halim Airport, and NOT the usual Soekarno Hatta International Airport. Please check first before purchasing your tickets.

2. Lion Group - Lion Air, Malindo Air, Wings Air

This airline is known for its continuous delays. However, I have had on time flights with this airline, which is surprising. They have a big group internationally now. With Thai Lion Air, and Batik Air (which is the higher level standard than Lion Air). Actually Batik Air I find is a bit more expensive but the service and the planes are newer. Wings Air uses smaller airplane. They usually fly very short distance, like Surabaya - Bali (which is only like 30-40min flights). The seats are only 2 on the right and 2 on the left. FYI, make sure you ask for the back seat when you are flying with Wings Air, as the door is at the back!

Food are usually not included with this flights but with some longer flights, you can purchase them on board (please make sure to check on this one to confirm). But there is the in flight shop if you are keen to buy souvenirs. Note that there is definitely NO MEALS available to purchase on smaller flights like Wings Air.

If you are on a tight schedule, don't fly with this one, unless you wanna get a heart attack on the plane. They have a record for the most delays in Indonesia~!

This is the cheapest way to fly around Indonesia. With flights I had costing only about $30AUD (Jakarta to Singapore)! So cheap, I reckon! You get what you pay with this. For international flights, you already get that 20kg for your baggage, which is a bonus! Service is standard but if you get the old plane, you might get old seats that quite smells. I think if you are looking for a very cheap flights and you don't really care about the plane, well this one is definitely for you to travel around Indonesia!

3. Sriwijaya Air - Nam Air

This airline is similar to Lion Air but with better time management. Nam Air and Sriwijaya Air are in the same group. So don't get worried if you purchase a Sriwijaya Air and you get a boarding pass of Nam Air. They are the same. 50-50 on this one. Sometimes you get old planes, sometimes you get new ones. Passengers usually gets snacks like chocolate wafers or biscuits and water. Not much to say about this one. They fly mostly domestically however they do have flights to Penang I heard, but I might be wrong. Please check first. Keep checking those prices and sometimes this airlines can be cheaper than Lion Air, which is amazing!
4. Air Asia Indonesia

Most of you would know this one, especially if you are living in the South-East Asia area. This is your normal budget airline with cheap flights and you have to pay extra for seats and your F&B. AirAsia in Indonesia mainly fly to nearby international countries like Australia (Perth & Darwin), Thailand (Bangkok & Phuket), Malaysia (Penang & Kuala Lumpur) and Singapore. They appear cheap but sometimes I find this airline have so much add ons (like baggage, seats, food) that in the end, it's a similar price to the Garuda Indonesia flights. So I always check all my other airlines as well and compare them all.

Anyway, there are other small airlines in Indonesia, like Trigana Air, Airfast and Kalstar, however they are mainly to and from the Java Island outbound to the other islands like Borneo. There is not much route with this one unless you are going out of the Java Island. I have had flights with Kalstar from Surabaya to Bali. The plane was similar to Sriwijaya Air I guess.

I spend most times on air so I find this info quite useful for those who are confuse of traveling within Indonesia and are scared to fly with local airlines. Anyway, just try them all! They can either surprise or screw your whole day~ It's all an experience when you're traveling! xoxo Peace. Just enjoy the life you've been given :)

Love,
JeffCha <3
